iChat Picture Pages

Historical Document

These pages have sat here since 2008 with no update. In that time the AIM servers have been closed down (2017) and iChat has been superseded by Messages. That effectively make this a sort of Historical Document of how it worked.

I will make attempts to renew and refresh Links to either the most current site or use the Way Back Machine Archive so that people can at least look at what was used. I will make Edit Notes on this and on those where I can find no link to replace the older one as I go through the document.

Options to go or start different forms of Text Chats. Go to Chat is Group Chats (and/or Chatrooms). The other going up the list from there are Direct text chatting (iChat will convert to this if you send a file or picture during the top option of Text Chatting). And of course the top option is plain Text chatting. In iChat 3 and 4 this will depend on the front Buddy List as to which sort of Chat it is.

Plain Text chatting is to one person but it happens over port 5190 on the TCP protocol. Direct chats, Sending files and Pictures happen on port 5190 on the UDP protocol. This is for the chat AIM valid Names. With Jabber it is on port 5222 for plain chats and 5223 for Secure chats. In iChat 5 and 6 there options in the Preferences > Accounts for secure logins bth for the AIM servers and some Jabber ones.

The Open and Open Recent options are to open chats that you have Saved. In the case of Open Recent it is about reopening Chats you have opened before. You can not open chats you have not Saved. Nor is it a feature to reopen/restart a Text chat where the window is still on your Desktop but the other person has left. See System Preferences > Gerneral Pane for the option to change the Recents number. It applies to any Apps "Documents", Servers and Applications

"Save Copy As..." is a place where you can save a Chat at a particular point or as a whole at the end if you do not have Save Transcripts active in the iChat Preferences.

Information Block

This site is about iChat from Version 1 through to iChat 5.x.x
Mostly this is kept as an Historical Document. Some small tense changes have been made but the content is by and large untouched.

It has a mixture of basic info and problem solving help.

The sections below will change for Specifics about info on the page on view

About This Page

Picture 2 in this series - the File Menu

These pictures are from iChat 3.

Compatibility

Confirmed to work with Win/IE 5.5 and later (should work in 5.0, but not confirmed), Firefox 2, Safari 3, Opera 9, iCab 3.02 and later, Mac/IE 5, Netscape 6 and later

Old browsers (IE version 4 or earlier, Netscape 4 or earlier) should only see a text-based page which, while not the prettiest option, is still entirely usable.

Compatibility

Much of this page has been altered to be as HTML 5 compatible as possible. This may cause issues with any of the Browser below.

I have tested in Safari 18.1, Firefox 130.x and 131.0, Vivaldi 6.9.3447.48 and iCab 6.2.3 (All Mac Browsers) I don't have access to a PC let alone multiple browsers to test on.
