iChat Picture Pages

Historical Document

These pages have sat here since 2008 with no update. In that time the AIM servers have been closed down (2017) and iChat has been superseded by Messages. That effectively make this a sort of Historical Document of how it worked.

I will make attempts to renew and refresh Links to either the most current site or use the Way Back Machine Archive so that people can at least look at what was used. I will make Edit Notes on this and on those where I can find no link to replace the older one as I go through the document.

iChat Preferences

iChat In Pictures >> You are in Folder 3_iChat Prefs >> Page: Chax
6[6] 6 Chax Prefs (an Add-on) 02-10-2006

I have an Add-On and as it appears in the Toolbar of other pictures in this series I thought I would show at least this screen of it. As you can see it goes on to have it's own tabs.

This is in fact from the version that worked with iChat 3 in Tiger when there was slightly more access with AppleScript and other Add-Ons to change the settings in iChat.

To give an idea:- the top section of the General tab allows you to overdie the default Fonts used in three places in the Buddy List window. On smaller screens it can save you a bit on real estate. Or they can be made bigger and more readable if that is you need.

In the second section the item that shows what iTunes is Playing (and shown as your Status Message) can be adjusted to show iTunes Store links as well.

Apple discided tha Buddy pics would be stored as .tifs whereas many other AIM able app used .gifs which are simpler to animate and take up less room. Although Animated Buddy pics makes it into iChat in later versions that Add-on added it for iChat 3.

By default the Buddy list opens to view abiut 15 Buddies or slightly list when it is a version thsat has the Group title bars in the Buddy List. It tends not to resize bigger or smaller other than the User changing the Window size. The last itme in the second section does this for you. It is useful when not that many Buddies are On line and it will shrink the Buddy list.

As you can see it has five other tabs as well as this one on display here. As well as this set in these Screens and tabs the Add-On also adds things to various menus indicated by a sticking plaster icon.

Most of the setting are about your Personal preferences on how iChat looks and works.

Information Block

This site is about iChat from Version 1 through to iChat 5.x.x
Mostly this is kept as an Historical Document. Some small tense changes have been made but the content is by and large untouched.

It has a mixture of basic info and problem solving help.

The sections below will change for Specifics about info on the page on view

Options to This Page

To the right you can resize or colour the page as well as choose one of three Fonts.

About This Page

Thois is picture 6 in this sequence - Chax Preferences

Chax is an Add-On that works in at least Version 3 and 4 and can alter the way iChat Loks and in soem areas how it respondes

The feature set is longer in iChat 3 - partly because Apple included some in iChat 4 and secondly they chaged the way iChat works to some extent which restricted access to some parts.

Compatibility

Confirmed to work with Win/IE 5.5 and later (should work in 5.0, but not confirmed), Firefox 2, Safari 3, Opera 9, iCab 3.02 and later, Mac/IE 5, Netscape 6 and later

Old browsers (IE version 4 or earlier, Netscape 4 or earlier) should only see a text-based page which, while not the prettiest option, is still entirely usable.

Compatibility

Much of this page has been altered to be as HTML 5 compatible as possible. This may cause issues with any of the Browser below.

I have tested in Safari 18.1, Firefox 130.x and 131.0, Vivaldi 6.9.3447.48 and iCab 6.2.3 (All Mac Browsers) I don't have access to a PC let alone multiple browsers to test on.

Previously confirmed to work with Win/IE 5.5 and later (should work in 5.0, but not confirmed), Firefox 2, Safari 3, Opera 9, iCab 3.02 and later, Mac/IE 5, Netscape 6 and later
