Historical Document
These pages have sat here since 2008 with no update. In that time the AIM servers have been closed down (2017) and iChat has been superseded by Messages. That effectively make this a sort of Historical Document of how it worked.
I will make attempts to renew and refresh Links to either the most current site or use the Way Back Machine Archive so that people can at least look at what was used. I will make Edit Notes on this and on those where I can find no link to replace the older one as I go through the document.

This picture obviously show an AIM type filled in (although my Screen Name is misspelt). It also shows that you can add other information as you deem relevant. What you type here will be displayed in the Buddy list AND feature as their Name in the Address Book where it will be also added.
You can get a problem if you try to add a Buddy this way and you have matching Information already in the Address Book.
For Instance lets say I was adding just my Real Name of Ralph Johns to the First Name and Last Name text fields. Obviously that is the name of my Mac User accounts and the Me Card in the Address Book. iChat would recognise this and report "Feedbag Error 10" ( See the Error Page ) and not add the Buddy to iChat or the Address Book. This is the same if you have a Buddy as a contact in the Address Book whether it is full details or just an Email Address. Adding their Screen Name to the Address Book info or using the Select Buddy option at the earlier window will sort this.
NOTES: iChat 4 does not report Feedbag Error 10 on screen like the earlier versions of iChat and just will not add the Buddy. Unfortunately it also matches a poor login situation normally cause by AIM updating their Screen Name Lists and it just seems like you can not Add a Buddy in general. It is a process of elimination which it is for you.
One other fact is that adding an Apple Screen Name of either @mac or @me.com will cause iChat and the Address Book to add that contact to the Address Book with just the Name as an email and not just a Screen Name (it adds to both points in the Address Card). This may cause confusion in Mail if the person is using a Trial Account (Or a lapsed paid for account) that has expired as it is then no longer a valid email address with Apple.
A reminder here that iChat 4 combines the previous window and this one to add Buddies by adding a reveal dropdown triangle (As well as the option to pick which Group they are added to.)

Information Block
This site is about iChat from Version 1 through to iChat 5.x.x
Mostly this is kept as an Historical Document. Some small tense changes have been made but the content is by and large untouched.
It has a mixture of basic info and problem solving help.
The sections below will change for Specifics about info on the page on view

About This Page
A pre-filled version of the window just to highlight an issue about adding Buddies that are already in the Address Book, and of course restate the Account Type of either an Apple Screen Name or an AIM one
Compatibility
Confirmed to work with Win/IE 5.5 and later (should work in 5.0, but not confirmed),
Firefox 2, Safari 3, Opera 9, iCab 3.02 and later, Mac/IE 5, Netscape 6 and later
Old browsers (IE version 4 or earlier, Netscape 4 or earlier) should only see
a text-based page which, while not the prettiest option, is still entirely
usable.
Compatibility
Much of this page has been altered to be as HTML 5 compatible as possible. This may cause issues with any of the Browser below.
I have tested in Safari 18.1, Firefox 130.x and 131.0, Vivaldi 6.9.3447.48 and iCab 6.2.3 (All Mac Browsers) I don't have access to a PC let alone multiple browsers to test on.
