iChat Picture Pages

Historical Document

These pages have sat here since 2008 with no update. In that time the AIM servers have been closed down (2017) and iChat has been superseded by Messages. That effectively make this a sort of Historical Document of how it worked.

I will make attempts to renew and refresh Links to either the most current site or use the Way Back Machine Archive so that people can at least look at what was used. I will make Edit Notes on this and on those where I can find no link to replace the older one as I go through the document.

Modem and Routers

iChat In Pictures >> You are in Folder 8_Modem:Router and it's Sub Folder Linksys Router
3[5] 3_Router_Modem-PortForward 02-10-2006

This picture shows the Port Forwarding set up page, filled in, for this device. Under the yellow elipse is the item you have to select (Application and Gaming) followed by the sub area indicated by the arrow.

As the Jabber ports are three ports numerically close together I have done them as a range in this set up.

That leads me on to this device's set up. It requires you to state Start and End Points. Not all devices do this. Most do it port by port as shown in the Thomson Alcetel pictures.

This is also the full table range (10 settings) for this device. You may find you also can not enter all 31 settings for iChat 2 and 3 if you have to label each Port by Protocol as well (no Both or Any Setting) on your device. In other devices the table expands to meet demand or has more spaces anyway.

However you can get the idea. The device points data on the ports, listed to the one IP, in this case 192.168.1.100

You will also see that in addition on this device there is also an Enable tick box on the right of each line.

From that you will realise that as these ports are pointed to one IP (Computer) others are excluded. Not good if you have two nearby computers and want to test or if you are in an Office situation and want everyone to use the same App.

Information Block

This site is about iChat from Version 1 through to iChat 5.x.x
Mostly this is kept as an Historical Document. Some small tense changes have been made but the content is by and large untouched.

It has a mixture of basic info and problem solving help.

The sections below will change for Specifics about info on the page on view

Options to This Page

To the right you can resize or colour the page as well as choose one of three Fonts.

About This Page

This page looks at the Port Forwarding set up in this Linksys device.

It does allow Ranges or ports - some ports needed are close anough to "Make a range" - others are an actual range (see the 9th Line). Most however are single ports and take up a lot of room in the Table. On some devices it can be almost impossible to enter the ports sensibly.

Some devices are more restrictive in only allowing you to set one port to one Protocol. Others are more like the earlier Mac Firewall where ports can be separated by commas and Spaces.

Compatibility

Much of this page has been altered to be as HTML 5 compatible as possible. This may cause issues with any of the Browser below.

I have tested in Safari 18.1, Firefox 130.x and 131.0, Vivaldi 6.9.3447.48 and iCab 6.2.3 (All Mac Browsers) I don't have access to a PC let alone multiple browsers to test on.

Previously confirmed to work with Win/IE 5.5 and later (should work in 5.0, but not confirmed), Firefox 2, Safari 3, Opera 9, iCab 3.02 and later, Mac/IE 5, Netscape 6 and later

Old browsers (IE version 4 or earlier, Netscape 4 or earlier) may only see a text-based page which, while not the prettiest option, is still entirely usable.
