These iChat (Version 1) pages are coloured Blue and have the iChat (1) icon on them that was in use at the time, so you know where you are. The icon differs from later ones by having the Running Man.
These pages have sat here since 2008 with no update. In that time the AIM servers have been closed down (2017) and iChat has been superceded by Messages. That effectively make this a sort of Historical Document of how it worked.

3 Alerts/Actions Preferences |
This is the Alerts/Action Preference pane for iChat (1)
This is where you can literally set the Whistles and Bells for iChat.
The Top drop down has a list of Events or Actions that can happen. You Logging In, a Buddy Logging In, an Invite arriving, a File Being sent, those sorts of things.
You can then chose a Sound in the second drop down. This second drop dwon includes souns from three places. The iChat sounds themselves are listed at the top. A second group will be those Sounds that are used by the System as Alerts. The third group if you have any are you own sounds stored in ~/Library/Sounds.
As you can see you can have it also speak a phrase. A default normally shows formost things but you can change them. If the @ symbol is present it will be read as the Buddy's name as you have them displayed in the Buddy List.
The volume you hear these at is controlled by System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effect tab and the Alert Volume
You can also make the icon for iChat in the DOCK bounce.
We follow this with the Privacy Prefernces.
