iChat 5 comes with Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.x). At the time of writing that is 10.6 through 10.6.3 iChat was updated to verion 5.0.1 in 10.6.2 and to version 5.0.3 in 10.6.3
These pages have sat here since 2008 with no update. In that time the AIM servers have been closed down (2017) and iChat has been superseded by Message and FaceTime. That effectively makes this a sort of Historical Document of how it worked.

This is the iChat 5 View menu.
Most of this menu deals with displaying the various Chat Windows and in the case of Buddy List what Appears in them. As default a Buddy List will display Buddies in the list with their Buddy icon, their Video or Audio ability iCon both of which are taller than the name on it's own. This menu allows you to hide these. This will in fact make the Buddy List slightly shorter which might be useful if you have several Buddy list taking up real estate on your Screen.
In the case of other thing that can shorten the Buddy List you can display it without Groups and without the Off Line Buddies
In this Menu you can Sort Buddies. As mentioned in all other versions this can be a two pass operation where you can sort Alphabetically and then by Availablity. If you are not using Groups then this List is those ON Line but with them arranged Alphabetically. If you are using Groups then the same thing happens for each Group.
The Messages item provides places to do the same in a Chat (As opposed to the Buddy List)
Smilieys are shown taller than Text. So do Buddy icons (Pictures) and Names can be taller that a one line of Text. AS you ca see at the bottom there are three choices to select between here.
In between is how the Text Chats look regarding the actual text background. The Default is obiously the Balloons and they are the top/first choice. Boxes are squarer at the edges and don't have the stick out speech item. Text is similar to the Tiger and Lion (pink and yellow) text areas I use on the more generic pages (See Page 2 for example) To be fair Compact view was a later additions and I can't remember using it so I can't tell you what it looks like.
The item called Buddies allows you to display Buddies as either First Name, Last Name or the other way round. The Address Book also allowed you to store Names with a Nickname as well which can be dispalyed in iChat.

This Page is about the Edit Menu of iChat 5. As with all apps it can be found almost far left of the Menu Bar 3 items right from the App Menu.
It gives access to all the normal things that you would expect in a App where there is text entry/typing that might require Editting.
You can Copy from any item in the Chat Window and Paste it back or into another Chat or Document. You can Copy and Paste into an iChat Text Chat - however there is an upper limit to the amount you can send. It is aboout 500 words or so in reallity. More than you might normally type but short of a Book's chapter.
One of the more regular things you might use is the Hyperlink option. If you just enter a Link into the text iChat is likley to replace it with the word Here. Otherwise you highlight a word or phrase from a text you are about to send and then use the link option to comvert it/them into the Link.
Partly because it happened in iChat but mostly as a general Warning about unknown incoming Links there is a bit about the Leap Worm.
